Space Dog

Laika, a stray found wandering the streets of Moscow was chosen by Soviet scientist to be the first dog to orbit the Earth. Scientist began this mission in order to discover if humans would then be able to survive the conditions of outer space.
Laika was put through extensive training and was launched into outer space on 3rd November, 1957 in the space craft Sputnik 2. Laika was chosen for a number of reasons, the main one being they believed a stray had already learnt to survive through extremely cold weather and hunger. Unfortunately, at this time, they had not yet developed the technology to de orbit so there was no real expectation on Laika's survival. At first information was given that Laika died only a few hours after take off but it wasn't until 2002 that the true cause of her death was released. The Soviet government claimed prior to her oxygen running out on day 6 that she Laika was euthanized.
Her trip into outer space proved that a living creature could survive being launched into orbit and paved the way for human spaceflight. In 2008, Russian officials erected a monument for Laika.

How lucky I have been to enjoy this month as the Resort's Dog of the Month! As we all know, the Golden Retriever is a pretty popular breed throughout not only Australia but the whole World. It's because we're simply the best... really!

According to  National Geographic the top 10 breeds of Dog in Australia for 2013 are;

  1.  Staffordshire Bull Terrier
  2. Labrador Retriever
  3. German Shepherd
  4. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
  5. Golden Retriever
  6. Border Collie
  7. American Staffy
  8. Poodle
  9. Pug
  10. Rottweiler

What do you think? Did your pooch make it to the top 10? Personally, I think they got it wrong. How can a Retriever not be number one?!

I hope everyone has a great weekend, keep your ears open next week for the announcement of November's Dog of the Month, maybe your pooch will be lucky enough to join me in the Hall of Fame?!

Find more information at the Australian National Geographic website.

The West Highland Terrier.

The West Highland White Terrier, better known simply as the Westie, is a small, happy, sturdy breed of dog. Originating from Poltalloch in Scotland in the mid-19th century they came about when a Scottish breeder of the Cairn Terrier had white pups in his litters. The white pups were selected and bred to create the West Highland White Terrier, which is simply a white Cairn Terrier. They were first known as the Poltalloch Terrier, and then later changed to the Roseneath Terrier after the Duke of Argyll’s estate. In 1909 their name was changed to West Highland White Terrier and they were used for controlling rats, fox, badger and other vermin populations.

The Westie is a very hardy little terrier who is very easy train, making them a perfect small dog for a family. They get along well with children and are generally friendly towards strangers. They require the right pack leader, and with the proper leadership are very lively and self-assured dogs who social well with other canines. They are an extremely friendly dog who loves companionship so thrive best in an environment where they get to spend a lot of time with their family. They do require a high amount of mental and physical stimulation, a daily walk is ideal to prevent boredom, destructive behaviours and unnecessary barking. Although a very happy dog, when irritated they can be snappy towards other dogs. Strong leadership and good socialisation will help to avoid this.

They have a short haired double coat which is course to touch but easy to groom while they shed little to no hair at all. Regular brushing will keep the coat clean and they only require a bath when necessary. Their coat does require a trim generally every 4 months and they will need a full strip out twice yearly. The breed is prone to hernias and hip problems and they do need to be kept  on a well-balanced diet to avoid weight gain. They are quite active indoors so will happily live in an apartment or a house with a small yard as long as they are able to get the daily exercise they require.

Dog of the Month - Babka!

The Golden Retriever is a sturdy, medium-large sized dog and a very popular family pet.
They originated in the late 1800’s in the Scottish Highlands and were developed by Lord Tweedmouth. He created the Golden Retriever by crossing the original yellow Flat Coated Retriever and the now extinct Tweed Water Spaniel. At a later stage he also crossed in the Bloodhound, Irish Setter and more Tweed Water Spaniel.
They were originally named the Golden Flat Coat but where later given the name of Golden Retriever. Today they are an ideal family pet but can also be used for hunting, tracking, obedience competitions or as guide and therapy dogs.

The Golden Retriever makes for such a great family pet because of their loveable nature and great charm. Being a very intelligent dog they are also easy to train. They are an extremely devoted dog and very loving towards their family. They thrive on pleasing their master so training from a young age is ideal to help create a well balance relationship.
They are a very friendly and highly sociable dog who loved to be surrounded by both people and other dogs. Although they are unlikely to attack they are a great watchdog and can be very loud when need be to alert you to a stranger approaching.
Golden Retriever’s are a highly energetic breed and they require plenty of physical exercise and stimulation as well mental stimulation. Without this they can become destructive or highly strung and behavioral issues can stem from this.
At a minimum they require a daily walk or run, making sure they walk beside or behind you, reminding them you are their pack leader. As a Retriever, they enjoy ball play and often enjoy carrying something in their mouth during the day.
Grooming is a daily requirement, brushing is needed to avoid matting and to remove any dead undercoat. They are an average shedder and only require a bath when necessary. They are prone to hip dysplasia and hot spots are also common as they enjoy the water.

Healthy Dog Treat Options

10/10/2013

We all love to give our dog's treats as rewards but many of us can make the mistake of giving too many too often.

Did you know a healthy alternative for commercial treats are slices of fresh apples, bananas, watermelon and carrots? Remember to ALWAYS remove the core and all pips from the apple, remove the banana skin and to take all the melon away from the outer skin before giving this to your pooch.

You're pooch should only be given a treat as a reward and in small quantities. For example, if you are training your dog to sit when you reach the road during the walk a small slice of apple or carrot is the perfect reward, they don't need the whole piece of fruit.

Be sure to avoid dangerous fruits such as grapes, raisins, peaches and most fruits with seeds and pips. If you're unsure of certain fruits or vegetables it's best to contact your local vet.
