The Boston Terrier

The Boston Terrier, also known in other parts of the world as Boston Bulls, are a small, compact little dog built of muscle. Originally known as the Olde Boston Bulldogge, the breed has been bred down in size over the years, from their 20kg size.
These small, adorable little balls of energy, when at their old larger size, were used at pit fighting dogs after originating in the city of Boston in Massachusetts, today they remain one of the only breeds to have been developed in the USA. When still at their larger size, the Boston Terrier were a cross between the English Bulldog and the English White Terrier (which is no extinct) It is believed the breed began to change around 1865, when coachmen from the area began cross and interbreeding their dogs, resulting in a dog called Hooper’s Judge being born.  He was far smaller than the Boston Terriers at the time, weighing around only 13.5kg, he was then bred with a smaller female and one of their male pups were bred with yet a smaller female and this is how the Boston Terrier of today was established. Around 1889 the breed was formally named after the area they were created and officially known as the Boston Terrier.
The Boston Terrier of today can grow up to 43cms and weighs anywhere between 4.5kg – 11.5kg. Their short coat comes in a variety of colours including brindle and white, black and white and seal. In some cases they are be born brown and white also.
Despite their originally purpose, the Boston Terrier of today is a very smart, gentle and enthusiastic little dog who are easy to train with the correct pack leader. Without enough mental and physical stimulation and exercise they can be highly strung. Being a small breed dog, they can easily develop small dog syndrome which can bring it’s own string of issues, so it’s important they have boundaries and rules set. They are not ideal as guard dogs, some owners have stated that their male Boston’s will bark at strangers however have never shown signs of aggression, they are more likely to welcome strangers with a lick and be ready for a pat. They are ideal pets for families with young children and are also great with the elderly.
They are a breed that adapt well to most living situations and reasonably inactive in doors, they can manage without a yard providing enough mental stimulation can be given. Due to their size and short coat, they can be sensitive to extreme weather conditions.
Being a sturdy little dog, the average life expectancy for a Boston Terrier can exceed 15 years.
