As we approach the warmer weather, English Bulldog owners need to be vigilant about keeping their pooch cool. English Bulldogs have an elongated palate that can hang down towards the back of their throat inhibiting their ability to pant and cool down naturally which can be fatal in hot weather. This can also lead to choking if you your English Bulldog scoffs their food.
Using a low lying, kids splash pool is a great idea to keep them cool but be careful not to overfill with water as English Bulldogs can not swim! Their short legs can’t paddle quick enough to keep their large, heavy body afloat, so they sink like a rock.
Gel pet cooling mats are also a great idea in the warmer weather for your pooch to relax on and keep cool.
English Bulldogs also require more attention be paid to their skin folds/wrinkles in the warmer weather as bacteria can form and infection may occur if grime & moisture is allowed to build up. In the warmer weather these should be cleaned twice daily, if possible, but at least once a day. A great way to clean the folds/wrinkles is by using alcohol/fragrance free baby wipes then dry with a clean towel.
English Bulldog owners must also have plenty of spare time for long belly rubs and a comfy couch for them to flake out on and snore up a storm!
