November Dog of the Month - Australian Cattle Dog.

The Australian Cattle dog, also known as the Australian Heeler, is an agile, powerful, courageous, robust working dog. They were developed in 1800’s by the Pioneer settlers by crossing Dingo-Blue Merle Collies to Dalmatians and Black & Tan Kelpies. By doing so, the result was dogs that were excellent workers who were brilliant at herding cattle on large ranches. Even under hot, harsh and dusty conditions, their superior stamina allowed them to work forcefully and able to drive cattle across vast distances. It’s herding and guarding instincts are very strong, and its talents include retrieving, agility, competitive obedience and performing tricks. The length of the body is longer than it is tall, and its ears are pricked when alert! In 1903 the breed standard was approved and many years later in 1980 the breed was fully recognised by the American Kennel Club.

Being one of the most intelligent breeds, they need something to keep their mind occupied all day – This is why they thrive from having a job to do. This breed needs plenty of mental and physical exercise and will reward you by being a wonderful and happy pet. They are easily trained; however need a strong pack leader due to their high dominance level, as they can be dog aggressive if they’re allowed to be pack leader. By doing so, they will be absolutely loyal and obedient to their master and if they are well balanced, are trustworthy with children. Problems can and will arise with owners who do not provide the right exercise regime and extensively work with their dog. They are very easy to groom as their shorthaired, weather-resistant coat only tends to shed once or twice per year and just needs a brush with a firm bristle and bath when required. This breed is prone to hip dysplasia, Progressive Retinal Atrophy and in the Merle-Coloured dogs, deafness. They make excellent jogging companions but make sure they’re beside or behind you to re-enforce that the human is alpha. These animals have exceptional stamina and really enjoy having activities to do. Keep their mind and body occupied with lots of room to roam in a nice large yard, and you’ll have a wonderful, loyal, loving family pet.

It's that time of year again, when we start baking yummy treats for ourselves and friends to share over the festive season, so why not make some doggy friendly treats for our 4 legged friends too?! In the lead up to Christmas we will be sharing some special recipes that are safe for your pooch!

Holiday Chicken and Chedder Treats

You will need

  • 1 cup rolled oats

  • 1/3 cup margarine

  • 1 cup boiling water

  • 3/4 cup cornmeal

  • 1 tablespoon white sugar

  • 2 teaspoons chicken bouillon granules
    (concentrated chicken flavour)
  • 1/2 cup milk

  • 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese

  • 1 egg

  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

  1. Preheat the oven to  165 degrees . Grease cookie sheets. In a large bowl, stir together the rolled oats, margarine and boiling water. Set aside for 10 minutes.
  2. Combine the cornmeal, sugar, and bouillon, stir into the oat mixture along with the egg and milk until smooth. fold in the shredded cheese. Gradually stir in the flour until a stiff but workable dough is formed. Knead the dough for a few turns. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut with a bone-shaped cookie cutter or cut into 1x3 inch rectangles. Place treats 1 inch apart onto the prepared cookie sheets.
